“Yet you never gave me even a young goat…”
Luke 15:1-3, 11-32
In today’s reading, Jesus, as he is faced with criticism from the scribes and Pharisees for mixing, mingling and eating with sinners, used this parable to help us understand the heart of the Father.
The two sons suffered with wrong mindsets. We see the “Geh meh” syndrome, which is evident by the younger son’s request – “Father, give me my share of the estate”. He felt that it was his right as a son to get what he deserved. Likewise, the elder son responded to his father, “Look! All these years I have been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends”
Secondly, we observe a contrasting approach shown by the father as he asks himself, “What can I give in these relationships?”
Let us pray to hold fast to the relationship we have with God, embracing a “What I can give in this relationship” attitude rather than ask, “What can I get out of this relationship?”. Let us be passionate in pursuing His Kingdom’s purpose!
