Lent: A challenge for today’s culture

Monday February 22nd: The Chair of St Peter, the Apostle.

Jesus gives Peter and us the Mission to build the Church.

Matthew 16:13-19

Today, Jesus has given Peter the mission to build his church on earth. Peter’s response to Jesus when asked, “But you, who do you say I am?” was “You are the Christ.” This indicates that Jesus is expecting that same response from us.
He wants to hear us saying “You are the Christ” the Savior, the One who is sent, who came to save. Like Peter, we are called to build the Church in the world and to reveal Christ, the Anointed. He who anoints Peter also anoints us; sets us apart in the role of priest, prophet and king to proclaim the Good News.
As was the case with Peter, the Keys of the Kingdom are laid upon our shoulders. We are given the power to heal, to forgive others and so bring to freedom those in captivity through prayer and the proclamation of the Word, revealing to them that “Jesus is the Christ the Son of the Living God”. Amen.
