Saturday January 16th: Are We Worthy?

“…Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

Mark 2:13-16

Sitting at a table at a church function years ago, I was once joined by a group of six persons, whom I considered highly religious and spiritual laypersons. They spent the time thoroughly enjoying each other’s company without saying a single word to me. Infuriated, of course, I asked myself: “So am I not worthy to be in their presence or be acknowledged?”.
This incident came to mind as I reflected on today’s Gospel. Clearly the question asked by the Pharisees was meant to clarify who was or wasn’t worthy of eating with Jesus. I also thought of the countless times I am told by persons who shy away from fellowshipping with the assembly, that there are way too many hypocrites in church.
Funny how we find ways of judging who is or isn’t worthy. The amazing thing is that, though we may not be deserving, God continues to yearn for us to be in His presence…to sit and eat with us…what an awesome and loving God!
Lord, help me to see everyone the way you see me…with love.
