Series: Youth reflect on 2020

By Antonio Timothy

This year 2020 has been an interesting year for me. Despite the many challenges like mental fatigue due to online classes, and the uncertainty of contracting and sharing COVID-19 to my family, the year still has been a spirit-filled year.

During the pandemic, I have grown more zealous for Christ. I had more time on my hands to reflect on the Gospel of John, and on the dynamic book of Acts. In December, I received the Sacrament of Confirmation. It was an exciting time knowing that I have received the many gifts of the Holy Spirit. I cannot wait to see what gifts will be revealed to me as my journey continues. It was also a joy to see my inspirations, His Grace Archbishop Jason Gordon, and my parish priest, Fr Ian Taylor, both celebrating the Eucharist at my confirmation.

Another great highlight for 2020 was joining the Holy Spirit Chosen Ministry, where young persons come together to praise and worship our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Every night we got together on Zoom for night prayer for approximately an hour. We also encourage young persons to strive for holiness.

Carnival camp, under the spiritual direction of Fr Ian Taylor, was also a highlight for me. I entered the Gospelypso contest and received an award for the youngest participant. Another was Jesus Explosion (JE). Despite the decrease in numbers because of COVID restrictions, JE was still impactful for my spiritual growth on this earthly pilgrimage.

I know this year was very strange. So many people lost their lives around the world; so many families are in grief and mourning. I still encourage everyone to hold on to Christ, to still seek His face in these uncertain times. He is our victory! Don’t give up too soon, have faith! We can’t do anything with Christ in our life. Faith over fear!

A scripture verse that really touches my heart during this whole pandemic is:
“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” – Romans 8:38-39

I end by saying there is hope for tomorrow. Jesus is greater than this pandemic.
