Saturday December 19th: A Time to Prepare

Even from his mother’s womb he will be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Luke 1: 5 – 25

According to google, there were at least seven births ‘announced’ in the Bible. Two of these are mentioned in the readings for today, Samson in the first reading and John the Baptist in the Gospel.

It is an interesting question to ponder, ‘Why the need to foretell these births?’.

In both instances, instructions were given as well as an insight into their lives ahead. But deeper than that, the parents needed to prepare themselves for the great and difficult lives their children will lead. I am reminded of Simeon’s words to Mary in Luke 2:34 – 35 “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel …And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

I pray today, as we prepare to celebrate another great birth, that we prepare our hearts and reflect on the impact Jesus has in our lives.
