Friday November 27th: Therein lies the kingdom

When we are looking for signs of the kingdom of God, don’t look for buildings and cities, instead we look for wellbeing and joy and happiness among people.

Luke 21: 29 – 33

Jesus said that when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near. What do ‘these things’ refer to? In an earlier passage in Luke, Jesus spoke of the kingdom of God, not as a physical reality, but as an experience of wellbeing and joy. When he announced that the Spirit has anointed him and he was going out in the name of God to build the said kingdom, he spoke of the blind seeing, the lame walking, the deaf hearing, the dead being raised and the good news being announced. When these personal uplifting experiences are taking place it means the kingdom of God is present among people. The kingdom of God is more about how God is with us and how we are with others and ourselves. When we are looking for signs of the kingdom of God, don’t look for buildings and cities, instead we look for wellbeing and joy and happiness among people.
