A man believed to be of unsound mind walked up to Bishop Francis Alleyne and robbed him while he was presiding over Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Georgetown on Saturday, November 7.
According to a news item on demerarawaves.com, the man was armed with “what appeared to be a sharp pointed object”. He walked up to Bishop Alleyne and Rev Francis Xavier Savarimuthu, grabbed the Bishop’s right hand, and took off his ring before snatching two other items including the Mass Book.
The incident unfolded on Facebook as the Bishop and Rev Savarimuthu were celebrating Mass. The deacon is expected to be ordained to the priesthood on November 21.
Bishop Alleyne and Rev Savarimuthu continued with the liturgy but were said to be shaken by the incident. The items were later retrieved by the police.
