October 31st: Answer the call

‘My friend, move up higher.’

Luke 14: 1, 7 – 11

This must be a favourite parable of every youth. I know it was mine. It gave me an excuse to sit as far back as possible at every event!

However, I must have conveniently forgotten the rest of the parable, because very seldom did I heed the call to move up. It is hard to explain why, but it was always somewhat uncomfortable to sit at the front. Even to this day, I still gravitate towards the back row.

Very rarely does God call us to do something comfortable, otherwise it would be easy to answer. No matter how uncomfortable ‘the call’ may be, we should always accept and answer when God calls us; especially now with the shortfall of vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

I pray today that every young person who hears God’s call to a life of humility, accepts it graciously; so that our Lord may in turn honour and move them up higher.
