Kingdom people are free to show love in the face of hate and forgiveness in the face of offence.
Luke 12: 54 – 59.
Today’s gospel reminds us that kingdom life is not a set of disjointed actions and events. The way natural occurrences lead to specific results, for example, a westerly cloud means rain or a south wind means scorching heat; so to situations can help us to display kingdom values. For example, being accused is an opportunity to practice forgiveness.
Kingdom life is not about effect being tied to cause, so that if someone accuses another they must battle it out in court until one wins over the other. Kingdom life is more about using opportunities to show God-related values. It is about using opportunities to be good news to someone.
A kingdom person is not tied to predetermined actions. A slap need not mean to slap back in return. The kingdom response is to turn the other cheek. Kingdom people are free to show love in the face of hate and forgiveness in the face of offence. Kingdom people are guided by God.
