Holy Name Convent launches first Virtual Art Galleries

"Shattered" by Kristen-Lee-Pack, Form 5 pupil

Rebirth and Art is Life 2!

Holy Name Convent Port of Spain (HNC) has a long tradition of providing an environment where the arts and culture are inculcated in its students. In that vein, the school will launch two virtual art experiences—Rebirth—an exhibition of student work today Friday, October 23, and Art is Life 2.

Last year, 2019, the school was unable to host its annual exhibition due to the physical displacement that it experienced after the earthquake of 2018. The artwork by the students illustrate the resilience, courage and perseverance that accompany a moment of rebirth.

Rebirth will be followed by a launch of Art is Life 2– a virtual art gallery on October 30, in conjunction with students, alumni artists and friends.  Art is Life 2 is an art auction held in aid of the school’s continued work of providing a holistic education for the 21st century to the young women who attend HNC. This art gallery will feature the work of HNC students, alumni, emerging artists, as well as the work of established local and overseas-based artists.

Now in its second installation, this event will be a unique virtual presentation that will take the art enthusiast through a fully interactive experience. The visitor will be able to visit the gallery and fully enjoy the exhibited works by numerous artists without leaving their home or office and will be able to directly purchase their desired piece of art online and have it delivered to them.

HNC has for many years been a front runner at producing talented and successful artists including Karen Sylvester, Sarah Joseph Dasent, Tonya St Cyr, Judy Shaw, Delia Brathwaite and Kathy Ann Mac Kay.

The school held a successful art auction at the Archbishop’s House in October 2018 when it decided to combine its fundraising efforts with an opportunity to support artists from among its student body, alumni and extended family. HNC received an amazing outpouring of artwork and the auction was very well supported despite the inclement weather experienced on the day.  Lisette Khan, Ag Principal at Holy Name expresses “sincere thanks to those artists, students, sponsors, supporters and committee members, who made the inaugural art event such a great success”.

Through the support of its incredible network and the dedication of all members of staff, HNC forges ahead in providing a dynamic virtual learning and teaching environment during this time of the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

This year’s exhibit is intended to create enthusiasm and passion amongst the school’s art students and has the potential to promote and develop the careers of many emerging artists. The exhibit will offer a mix of novice and professional art, sculpture and jewellery.

Whilst ‘virtual art galleries’ may be a new concept for many locally, they have been in existence for some time and offer several opportunities for young artists especially during the current COVID-19 restrictions. The virtual gallery also creates an interesting, safe, queue free, unencumbered and 24/7 environment for the art lover to visit, view and purchase art at their own convenience.
