Support Our Seminarians: Fundraising dinner now takeaway

Due to the present pandemic, this year’s annual seminary fundraising dinner ‘Seeds of Hope’ carded for Friday, November 13 will now take the form of takeaway only at several venues across the archdiocese.

The dinner is organised by the group ‘Friends of the Seminary’ to raise funds for the upkeep of the Seminary of St John Vianney and The Martyrs of Uganda, Mt St Benedict, and its seminarians.

Presently there are 12 seminarians. Major areas of expenditure include tuition and other formation expenses, food, lodging and utilities, and stipend for seminarians. The cost per annum per seminarian is approximately $65,000.

This dinner pickup titled ‘Special Pandemic Take Away’ is from 5.30 p.m. to 7 p.m. followed by a blessing by Archbishop Jason Gordon at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $200.

Friends of the Seminary member Debbie Tam told Catholic News that the annual “sit down” dinner is usually held at the Centre of Excellence, Macoya, Tunapuna. This year’s dinner comprises different menus based on pickup location.

Tam explained that tickets have been “going very quickly”. The group initially printed 536 tickets which has now increased to 1056.

Archbishop Gordon has said that the Seminary is a vital part of the Church.

“That’s where our generation of clergy come from,” he said in a video message promoting the annual dinner.

He revealed that twice this year, the archdiocese tried to have a seminary collection, but it was not possible as churches remain closed during the COVID-19 restrictions.

The Archbishop commented that though persons can’t come together physically to attend the dinner, they are still invited to participate in the fundraiser.

“We are asking to please support us,” he said.

Persons are reminded to follow all protocols when collecting their meals—wear masks and social distance.
