The one who neglects their interior life and charity to others after being renewed, relapses into worse vices.
Luke 11: 15 – 26.
Jesus’ word about an unclean spirit returning to the person it previously inhabited and even bringing reinforcements sounds like a relapse. A relapse is bad. People avoid relapsing after an illness because it is worse than the first infection. The main cause of relapses is carelessness.
Relapses can occur in spiritual and moral life. Everyone experiences renewals of different kinds throughout their Christian life. It may be a religious retreat, seminar, reconciliation, prayer / worship service or personal divine experience. After a deeper encounter with God and spiritual, moral or emotional healing takes place, if one becomes careless about maintaining their renewed life a relapse can occur and one could become worse than before.
Renewal is not an end, it needs follow-up. Christian follow-up is daily prayer, weekly worship, ongoing charity, virtuous living and living a sensible life. The one who neglects their interior life and charity to others after being renewed, relapses into worse vices. Today Jesus warns against relapsing.
