September 30th: Yes; but first…

“Your duty is to go and spread the news of the kingdom of God.”

Luke 9:57-62

So many demands that the urgent and the important are indistinguishable. To follow now or get on board later, becomes a muddle. The characters in today’s Gospel passage had no objection to following Jesus and their ‘Yes; but first…’ is very familiar to us, would-be disciples.

Willingness alone does not qualify us. Someone said that true discipleship is about ‘intent and extent’ and therefore no matter how genuine the intention, its value is hinged on the extent of the commitment and the urgency attached to it.

True discipleship leaves no room for compromise, half measures, indulging self and pleasing others. It is about putting God first and making the building of His kingdom priority. Tall order for many of us when creature comfort, family connections and conforming to norms compete for precedence..

‘The road to hell is paved with good intentions,” Ma told us as often as she noticed the gap between our expressed desires and our actions.

When we put our hands to the plough, Lord, let us not turn back. Amen.
