September 16th: Choices

“Yet Wisdom is justified by all her children”

Luke 7:31-35

Jesus is frustrated with the indecision of the Scribes and Pharisees yet praises the tax collectors who, ironically, have no such problem. These individuals, having heard John the Baptist, present themselves for baptism while the Scribes and Pharisees remain on the side-lines.
He notes how critical they are of John because of his austere approach to life but at the same time rejects his, Jesus’, easy-going approach. This indecisiveness, to him, is their major flaw.
Conversely, he sees the tax collectors, the little ones, the children, attempting to change their lives by being baptised by John and applauds them as possessing true wisdom. They have acted, they have made a choice. The leaders, on the other hand, “sit in the marketplace” failing to make a choice and have thus missed the boat.
My God grant us wisdom and courage to make right choices and act upon them.
Forgive us for the times we did nothing.
Thank you for those moments when we were filled with wisdom, doing what is required.
