God intended marriage to be a true commitment for life no matter the difficulties that may arise.
Matthew 19: 3 – 12
The gospel passage reveals a tendency in human behaviour, that is to look for loopholes. A loophole is a means of escape or a way out. We can always find loopholes when it suits us.
Moses gave Israel a way out of the marriage contract. It was called a writ of dismissal or a divorce. The motive for divorcing could be as trivial as not liking the food one day or as serious as adultery.
Jesus said that God the Father did not make loopholes a part of the marriage commitment. God intended marriage to be a true commitment for life no matter the difficulties that may arise. Marriage is neither a matter of personal convenience nor mere tolerance. It is the firm decision to leave one’s birth family and form another with no conditions applied. Marriage is not temporary. It is for life!
Jesus does not support anyone’s need to find an escape or loophole. He always encourages lasting commitment.
