Those who renounce self, take up their cross and follow Jesus will live in God’s promise.
Matthew 16: 24 – 28.
Today’s passage is a challenge to anyone who wants to be a faithful disciple of Jesus. The challenge is to walk the way he walked.
We know that Jesus suffered the terrible fate of the cross, not because he was bad, but because he was faithful to the Father until the end. Fidelity has a price. Those who chose fidelity over quitting, endure a lot.
Every disciple must make a choice to follow the way of Jesus that may end in suffering and death or follow the way of the world which promises pleasures and enjoyment.
The choice seems easy, pleasure is more attractive than pain. However, in choosing pleasure and enjoyment, be aware that they lead no where and produce no lasting fruit.
Jesus suffered greatly. Those who follow him would as well. God promises resurrection, lasting peace and genuine love after suffering and death. Those who renounce self, take up their cross and follow Jesus will live in God’s promise.
