August 3rd: We must go to the other side

August 2nd: Food for all

Only with sacrifice and compassion, in communion and solidarity will the bread of life be broken and shared by ALL.

Matthew 14: 13-21

As every disciple discovers,
where the feet go the heart follows.
Journeying with Him through desert places,
nourished by His word and filled with His passion,
those who came to know Jesus left everything behind, and followed Him.
For them, His life became a constant call to
compassion for the little ones – the poor of the earth;
a commitment to build a world of solidarity and undying hope for all;
and a reminder of a more profound and transforming truth,
a truth that comes only from above.

A life lived in defense of the poor and the weak can often lead to suffering and death,
as John the Baptist reminded us at the beginning of today’s Gospel.
We may eat our bread with indifference while the hungry are sent away.
When we do this, the Living Seed falls on arid soil,
with no generous hearts to nourish them, nor hands willing to share.
Only with sacrifice and compassion, in communion and solidarity
will the bread of life be broken and shared by ALL.
