August 1st: Her wish, his command.

John’s disciples came and took the body and buried it; then they went off to tell Jesus.

Matthew 14: 1-12

She was given the head of John the Baptist as payment for the dance she did at Herod’s birthday.  Herod gave her what she wanted because of what he had promised his guests. The girl’s mother prompted her to ask for John’s head;
So many times we hear of someone killed after a birthday lime or a boat trip at which they were supposed to be celebrating life, but ended in death.  A young man at my school died after a boat trip, shot by someone who watched him all night.
Herod and Herodias and her mother were  celebrating Herod’s birthday, celebrating life and at the same time plotting the death of John the Baptist. And John’s  disciples came and took  his body and buried it and went off to tell Jesus. Their dream that John would lead them died; they went to Jesus
