July 15th: Wise but clueless!

‘I bless you Father of heaven and earth for hiding these things from the wise and learned and revealing them to mere children.’

Matthew 11:25-27

Reflecting on this passage I can almost hear my mother saying to us, ‘a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.’ Very often the ones who are ‘learned and clever’ believe that they know all the answers.

Relying on their own intelligence and expertise they forget that their talent comes from God. Puffed up with pride in their achievements, they don’t realize that whatever talent they may possess is only ‘a little bit’ in comparison to the Creator who knows all, sees all and can do all. Attempts to fix their own problems as well as the problems of the world are like chasing after their own tails.

These things are hidden from them but revealed to the simple, humble and meek, whose faith and trust in God is like children who depend on their parents to protect, guide and do what is best for them. They look to God’s word for guidance and rely on His promises knowing that if they make the Lord their ‘habitation’ no plague shall come near their dwelling.
