“Courage child, your sins are forgiven”
Matthew 9:1-8
This experience of Jesus with the Scribes and Pharisees remind me of the ongoing question of many Non-Catholics with the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Jesus was always ready to teach in every situation. Here He is demonstrating that eternal life is much more important than ‘the now’. But in order for the paralytic and each one of us to inherit such life we must be cleansed from sin. It was much easier to heal the man physically but the spiritual healing would not have been recognized. “Courage child, your sins are forgiven,” he said. These are words that we hear distinctly in our hearts when we visit the priest for Confession.
Jesus is accused by the Jewish leaders of blasphemy because they never believed that He was God. My dear friends, physical healing is important, but forgiveness of sins, is critical for us to enjoy eternal life.
Let us pray that we will seek repentance, believing that Jesus not only has the power to heal, but to forgive sins. Amen.
