They asked to be sent into the pigs and so they were, only to perish with them.
Matthew 8 : 28-34
In this reading Jesus comes face to face with two demoniacs. They recognize him as “Son of God,” and wondered why he came to torture them “before the time.”
The demoniacs knew that Jesus was the Son of God. They called him by that name. They asked that if he cast them out, send them into the nearby herd of pigs.
The gentle, almost apologetic manner, with which Jesus does so, reminds me of the local admonition, ‘Be careful what you ask for’. They asked to be sent into the pigs and so they were, only to perish with them.
I remember once being ill and praying that God would heal me of the illness. I prayed and prayed, not asking God if it was his will, but telling him to heal me. He did for a while. I thought I was better.
But then, things changed. I found myself again struggling with my illness and unable to cope with everyday life. Had I perished with the pigs?
