‘She in her poverty has put in everything she possessed, all she had to live on.’
Mark 12:38-44
They are not as uncommon as we sometimes think. I refer to those of the same ilk as the widow to whom Jesus refers in today’s Gospel passage, as he observes her at the temple treasury.
COVID-19 has brought so many of them to our notice, here and abroad: giving, not out of abundance; doing without counting the cost of time, talent and treasure; sacrificial giving. The Gospel message has not been lost! We thank God not merely for the spirit of generosity we see embodied around us, but the spirituality of generosity (as Matthew Kelly refers to it) being manifested in families, churches, communities, organisations. We thank God for so many ‘widows’ willing to give their ‘mite’ to make a mighty difference to life around us in these COVID-19 times.
Father God, continue to move us from stinginess and selfishness to selflessness and generosity so that as we battle this storm together we will emerge more in the likeness of Christ. Come Holy Spirit renew the face of the earth!
