June 5th: A question of identity.

Jesus is more than a descendant of David; He is Lord and Saviour.

Mark 12: 35 – 37.

As Jesus drew closer to the end of his public ministry two things will became the centre of focus. They are his passion / death and his true identity.  Today’s gospel passage says that the scribes spoke of the latter.

The scribes maintained that Jesus was the son of David. There is a lot of truth in that, since all the Old Testament prophecies about him say that Jesus descended from the House of David. And while that is true, it is not the whole truth.

Jesus is more than a descendant of David; He is Lord and Saviour. When David spoke in Psalm 110, he called Jesus Lord, in the truest sense of the word. The scribes got it wrong!

We must not confuse Jesus’ identity. He is not one among all the wonder-workers there are. If he is, then one is just as good as the other. Jesus stands above all others. It is only he who is our salvation.
