Then to the disciple he said, ‘ This is your mother’.
John 19:25-34
Being at someone’s bedside as they are dying is never a nice experience. Can you imagine what it must have been like for Jesus’ mother, his aunt, Mary of Magdala and the other disciples to be there at Jesus’ death? Here, the man they had known for some thirty years, was being brutally but innocently put to death.
So we understand the disciple he loved, making a place for Mary in his home; after all it is the dying wish of her son. Today the universal church celebrates the feast of Mary the Mother of the Church, entrusted to her safe keeping. We remember clearly the image of Mary cradling the body of her Son in her precious mantle at the foot of the cross. Today during this time of global pandemic, the Mystical Body, the church, is in the precious care of a loving mother who continues to intercede for us.
Mary Mother of the Church, continue to plead our cause in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
