May 22nd: He is our All in all

The disciple’s assurance is God who endures beyond these fleeting things.

John 16: 20 – 23.

Today Jesus compares the enticement of the world with the patience of discipleship. The saying: “The grass always looks greener on the other side”, may be appropriate today. We always seem to fall into the trap of comparing ourselves with the world around us. We wish we could be like them and have what they have and live as they do.

Jesus says that the world will rejoice and would seem to be a glamorous place. It will entice us and make us believe we must be a part of it. It will even tempt us to sell ourselves in order to blend in.

The teaching is, disciples must not eye the world and wish for it while forsaking God. The world’s pleasures and happiness are fleeting. The disciple’s assurance is God who endures beyond these fleeting things. Jesus showed by his life that in end God is our true treasure and joy and He satisfies us perfectly.

(Psalm 23: 5). Trust God rather than buy into the world.
