May 19th: Moving on

“It is for your own good that I am going.”

John 16: 5-11

Saying goodbye is not ever easy; we often do not want others to leave us. There is much comfort in having the people we love around. In the Gospel today Jesus tells his disciples that he is leaving them and he is doing that for their good.

This passage reminds me of when the time came for my elder siblings to move on either to university abroad or simply to migrate or even to move out of the home. We could not imagine life without all of the family.  It took us a while to understand how we can have more if some of my siblings moved on. The truth was evident in the rest of us having greater responsibilities and opportunities for growth which would not have been possible if the whole family had stayed together. My parents facilitated our growth by letting us move on at the appropriate time. Good leaders, like Jesus, know when it is time to move on and it is always for the good of others.
