April 19th: Touching wounded believers

Through His suffering and death, God’s gifts of reconciliation, of peace and new life, were given to all.

John 20: 19-31

Few Gospel passages describe more vividly the anguish which filled the Upper Room where the disciples took refuge after the crucifixion. Sadness over His death and a greater sadness born of guilt filled their hearts. But Jesus’ reassuring presence and message of peace opened the door to forgiveness.

When Jesus appeared among them, full of life after all that had taken place in Jerusalem,

their lives were transformed forever. The same Jesus who died for the Kingdom was alive once more. Nothing, neither their denial nor their guilt, nor death itself, could prevent the Risen Christ from being united with his friends.

It was to them He entrusted his mission, on the condition that they share his wounds. The same peace that embraced and transformed sinners and outcasts who followed Him when he walked the roads of Galilee, He now gave to his disciples, and through them, to all wounded believers, for all time.
