April 17th: His abiding presence

Every time Jesus appeared to them, he gave them a comforting word.

John 21: 1 – 14.

The post-resurrection stories have one thing in common, that is, Jesus showed himself repeatedly to the disciples. This is not meant to point out the obvious, but to remind us of one aspect of the special relationship Jesus has with all disciples.

He showed himself to them on several occasions, not to prove his previous predictions right, but to assure them that neither he nor the Father has abandoned them. Every time Jesus appeared to them, he gave them a comforting word: ‘do not be afraid’, ‘peace’, ‘come and have breakfast’, etc.

Jesus’ presence assures us that God is with us. Though we are in the Easter season, the season of joy and rejoicing, we cannot ignore the threat to faith and hope caused by the Covid 19 virus.

Jesus is with us in the forms of friendly telephone calls, a passing wave, televised Mass, prayers offered, etc. We have to believe that God is with us always, to pick us up when we are down and to comfort us when we are sad.
