They are secure in their houses, gathered around a little light, where love lives and communion happens.
Luke 24:35-48
While you walk, even with the stranger, stories unfold, faith grows, and the appetite for communion is awakened. If after the long walk, the heart wrenching journey, the step after step revealing and unwrapping of the self, you do not break bread and have communion, you are forgoing the great opportunity and gift that the master left us: the scales fall away; recognition happens; the stranger becomes a friend.
If after the desert of all deserts; the Lenten season of all seasons; the great Covid-19 sacrifice that we bear, we cannot gather in our family home and break bread and have the Last Supper, then the ritual is broken and the opportunity lost to recognize the Lord in our midst.
Still, ’Do you have anything here to eat?’ knocks at the Cathedral door, it’s dark, no one inside; peering through the lattice, a table set for supper, napkins neatly folded, but no one answers. They are secure in their houses, gathered around a little light, where love lives and communion happens.
