March 18th: Herein lies greatness!

“But the man who keeps them and teaches them will be considered great in the kingdom of heaven.”

Matthew 5: 17-19

Almost all the things that affect human living have to do with ‘theory and practice’. It is one thing knowing but the test is in the doing; we know this all so well. This gospel passage for today brought these thoughts to mind as I reflected on it.
The Pharisees lived by the ‘letter of the law’ but Jesus lived by the law of love. Jesus’ life was love itself; he put love above all. We see this in his practice, how he treated people who were marginalized, sick, oppressed and hungry; his love of God and neighbour superseded all other laws.

I was at a funeral recently and the grand children of the deceased were celebrating the profound connection their grandmother had with them and her neighbours, how lovingly she interacted with them. Her loving care and concern about their welfare were evident, especially to anyone who was in any difficulty. Is this what being “great in the Kingdom of heaven” means? May love dominate our living.
