Inspiring others through Children of God

“The Spirit himself and our spirit bear united witness that we are children of God” Romans 8:16. These are the words upon which The Children of God group of the Uganda Martyrs RC Church, Longdenville, established its foundation 16 years ago. The group commemorated this anniversary with Holy Mass on February 1 officiated by Fr Urban Hudlin OP who served as the  group’s spiritual director from its inception.

The Children of God started at the St Philip and St James RC Church in April 1999. It was cultivated there for five years before solidifying its new home in Longdenville in February 2004. All members strove to nurture the development of the Children of God programme and 16 years later, the group continues to flourish and gain full support from its shepherd, Fr Derek Anton.

Passion and commitment were all that was needed for founding members: Pamela Lewis (coordinator), Garry Bartholomew, Annie Halls, Monica Mitchell and Marjorie Pierre to thrust an idea into fruition.

According to Lewis, “The spiritual growth of children must be continuous. We needed to find a way to bridge the gap between First Communion and Confirmation. Learning about Jesus should be a fun and interactive experience for kids.”

The Children of God programme leads the kids on a spiritual journey in preparation for Holy Eucharist as well as building and sustaining a relationship with Jesus. This is done within various age groups: Pre-First Communion, First Communion and Post First Communion; each of which engages the kids in learning the Word of God at a suitable level while also tapping into their creativity. From singing in the choir, to altar servers, to making rosaries, to Bible readings, each Sunday’s class brings forth a new experience for the children; one which they look forward to.

The Children of God group also emphasises the importance of parent’s spiritual growth as there is the availability of faith-building sessions for parents and guardians.

Congratulations to all members, past and present of the Children of God group. A heartfelt thank you for laying a solid foundation for our children’s spiritual journey. May God continue to bless you and your mission.
