GUADELOUPE

The Funeral Mass for Bishop Emeritus Ernest Cabo of the Diocese of Basse-Terre and Pointe-à-Pitre took place Thursday, December 5, 10 a.m. in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Basse-Terre. Bishop Jean-Yves Riocreux presided.

Bishop Cabo, 86, passed away peacefully at the Sacred Heart nursing home in Basse-Terre, surrounded by his family on the evening of Thursday, November 28.

He was born December 15, 1932 in Sainte-Rose, Guadeloupe, baptised January 22, 1933 and ordained priest October 4, 1964.

Bishop Cabo was a Vicar in Capesterre, chaplain of youth movements, head of vocations, director of the Paul VI Vocational Home in Basse-Terre and Pointe-à-Pitre. In 1972, he was appointed parish priest of the Sacred Heart Parish, Pointe-à-Pitre.

Named Bishop by St John Paul II, he was consecrated Bishop on November 6, 1983 in St Peter St Paul’s Cathedral, Pointe-à-Pitre.

Bishop Cabo was made auxiliary Bishop to Bishop Simeon Oualli, then became bishop of Guadeloupe on July 2, 1984. Thus, he exercised his episcopal ministry for nearly a quarter of a century until May 15, 2008.

He retired first to the bishop’s office, then to Gourbeyre. He resided at the EHPAD of the Sacred Heart in Basse-Terre, near the bishop’s office since May 2016.

A prayer vigil for Bishop Cabo was held Wednesday December 4, from 5 p.m. until midnight at the Bishop’s Residence (near the Cathedral).
