Legion of Mary celebrates anniversaries

The legionaries attached to the Regia Our Lady of The Rosary of Fatima, Port of Spain celebrated the 98th anniversary of the establishment of the Legion of Mary worldwide, which was founded by Frank Duff in September 1921. We also celebrated the 85th anniversary of its establishment locally. The Legion was introduced into Trinidad in October 1934. Legionaries give thanks to God for all that He has done for us during these years.

Holy Mass was offered at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Thursday, September 5 by our Spiritual Director Fr Pax Jey-Sharwan VC, who was ably assisted by Deacon Michael Smith. Legion prayers and recitation of the rosary began at 4.30 p.m. Holy Mass was scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

Legionaries who came from several parts of Trinidad, also gave thanks to Our Blessed Mother Mary under whose banner and leadership, legionaries serve in the Church and become leaven in the world.

In his homily, Fr Pax reminded us that God came to us through Mary, and that Mary takes all our prayers and heavenly offerings and purifies them as she offers them to God on our behalf.

He reminded us that contrary to the distraction and misunderstanding of some, we do not worship Mary. All worship is given to God. However, we honour her and the saints.

Pope St John Paul II said, “If our one and only mediator is the man Christ Jesus, as the Council states, Mary’s motherly role towards men in no way diminishes this unique mediation of Christ. On the contrary, it demonstrates its efficacy.”

He continued: “For its birth and growth, apostolic work looks to her who gave birth to Christ, conceived by the Holy Spirit. Wherever the mother is, there too is the Son. When one moves away from the mother, sooner or later he ends up keeping distant from the Son as well” (6, Legion Handbook).

As if ordained by Divine Providence, the Church celebrates the birthday of Mary on September 8, the day after the anniversary of the birth of the Legion of Mary which took place at Myra House, Dublin Ireland, on September 7, 1921.

Happy Birthday to Mary, and Happy Anniversary to all legionaries! May God continue to bestow His blessings and graces on all legionaries of Mary, on our society and the world.

We encourage all legionaries and particularly our junior legionaries to persevere in prayer and good works. Remain faithful to God. Let us pray the rosary daily and ask her, who is the Mediatrix of all graces to intercede for us all.

We thank  Phillip Medina,  one of our faithful young legionaries, who represented the juniors and  did the first reading and responsorial psalm. We also thank Fr Pax, Deacon Smith,  all the altar servers, Eucharistic ministers, the choir,  the security personnel and all  those, who helped in making the Mass  a most wonderful experience. —Regia Our Lady of The Rosary of Fatima
