Guyana delegates for Synod on the Amazon

GUYANA

Three of the four delegates from the Caribbean for the global meeting of Catholic bishops from the Amazon region are from Guyana. They are Bishop Francis Alleyne OSB, Leah Casimero and Silverius Perry who both work with teachers in the bilingual education programme for the Wapishana (an indigenous group found in the Roraima area of southern Guyana and northern Brazil) children in three communities. The fourth delegate is the Antilles Episcopal Conference President Bishop Gabriel Malzaire of Roseau, Dominica.

Catholic Standard reported that the vast majority of the other 185 voting members of the October 6–27 gathering are bishops or priests from the nine countries that each include part of the Amazon rainforest: Brazil, Ecuador, Venezuela, Suriname, Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, Guyana and French Guiana. The country with the most representatives is Brazil, with 58 members. Colombia comes next with 15, followed by Bolivia with 12.
