Seminary honours Fr Hugh Joyeau

The Seminary of St John Vianney and the Uganda Martyrs and its seminarians recently honoured the late Fr Hugh Joyeau by dedicating their students’ lounge to the beloved confessor and spiritual director.

The Hugh Joyeau Lounge (formerly the audio-visual room) was blessed during orientation weekend on September 1 and Fr Hugh’s brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Kathleen, were present at the unveiling of the photo of Fr Hugh.

The blessing of the ‘J Lounge’ was one of three events which initiated the new semester.

At midday on Thursday, September 12, Archbishop Jason Gordon presided at the Opening Mass in the seminary chapel, marking the official start of the academic year 2019–2020.

The special Eucharist gathered together the diocesan seminarians—including five who moved from the Aspirancy/Pre-Seminary programme to the major seminary—students of the Spiritan community and lay students, staff, formators and family members.

On the same evening, then-Deacons Kwesi Alleyne, Stephan Alexander and Kenwyn Sylvester prayed Vespers with the seminarians, staff and guests of the priests-to-be at the seminary. During the celebration the ordinands’ new vestments were solemnly blessed.—Johan Oliveire, seminarian
