First Communion in Carapichaima

The children pray the ‘Our Father’ in sign language.

A total of 23 little children dressed beautifully in colours of black and white entered Carapichaima RC on Sunday, June 30 at 6.30 a.m. to the strains of “Oh praise ye the Lord, praise God in his Sanctuary, oh praise ye the Lord!”

The First Communion candidates were all actively involved in various parts of the liturgy—the readings, Prayers of the Faithful, collection, Presentation of Gifts and vote of thanks. A very special activity of the praying of the ‘Our Father’ was done by the group in sign language as the congregation prayed together with them.

In his homily, Fr Gerard Bernier addressed the congregation by talking to the candidates about this important presence entering into their lives. He also cautioned the parents, guardians and parish community of their role in ensuring that these children keep on the journey of discipleship: “We cannot allow ourselves to be sidetracked; Christ calls us to follow Him”. He asked parents to look at their lives and to set examples that will lead these children to God.

After the final blessings and thank you done by the children to the catechists Megan Payison, Natasha Lamy-Ramsden, and Terrance Chariah, parents and parishioners, a hearty breakfast and sharing followed. Blessings flow as Carapichaima RC continues to build and foster the presence of Christ in the lives of God’s people.—Rosemarie Siewnarine
