Vicar General Monsignor Terrence Montrose was conferred the Cacique Crown of Honour by President David Granger at the Investiture 2019 Ceremony held at the National Cultural Centre (NCC) in May.

When asked for a comment after he accepted his national award, Msgr Montrose responded, “It was quite a surprise to know that my ordinary work was recognised beyond the Catholic community.”

He added in his remarks to Catholic Standard that, “The Award pays tribute to all the collaborators who helped me to forge ahead in proclaiming the Gospel in the Guyanese context.”

This year, 77 outstanding Guyanese were conferred with National Awards. The Constitution of the Orders of Guyana recognises and respects citizens whose selfless service made measurable impacts in the country in diverse fields—academia, business, charity, defence, the economy, education, enterprise, faith, health, sport, security and other public services.

Msgr Montrose joins a number of Catholic clergy and laity who have been officially recognised and honoured by the government and people of Guyana. Those who have received national awards in the past include Bishop Benedict Singh, Jesuit priest Fr Aloysius Church, Fr Michael Rose, the Sisters of Mercy and many others.

According to the diocesan weekly, Msgr Montrose, ordained a priest in 1969, has worked tirelessly over the years living the Gospel and at enabling the values of the Kingdom to flourish in every situation. He worked mainly in local parishes and communities and has been a source of encouragement and guidance for countless people.

Catholic Standard recalled a newspaper article some years ago that pointed out that Msgr Montrose was ‘green’ long before it became fashionable. It was also stated that while he often shared his concerns through “hard-hitting sermons” from the pulpit, he also either spearheaded or has been part of a number of projects to address poverty, a variety of social justice issues and to forge social cohesion in the community.
