In the garden with Dad

Gardening is a great activity to do with dad. Photo Source: verywellfamily.com

It’s the one special day that we celebrate dads around the world. Usually when we think of gifts for our fathers/grandfathers/godfathers/father figures, it is usually associated with sports, clothing or his favourite meals.

This Father’s Day, create memories with dad with gardening activities. Here’s some wonderful ideas to get done with your dad today.

Plant a tree – Choose a spot in your backyard or in an area special to you and your dad. Purchase from your preferred plant shop a fruit tree or a deciduous tree (tall flowering tree) and plant it with your dad. Ensure you fertilise it and water it accordingly. As the years go by, it will be the special tree that you and your dad will never forget.

Do-it-yourself decorative plant pots – This is definitely a fun, creative daddy-and-daughter activity. You will need old plastic containers, spray paints or oil paints and a sharp cutting tool (to be operated by dad). The sky is the limit when it comes to designs, patterns and shapes of these pots. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly and ensure to make holes at the bottom of the container for drainage. These will come in very handy for this year’s Corpus Christi planting.

Build a grow box – Grow boxes are container-based gardens which can be both soil based or hydroponically based. It is a wonderful father and son activity where dad can show off his tools. They are usually square or rectangular and can be constructed using plastic, wood or concrete blocks. Refer to the ‘Green Thumb’ January 13 issue for a full guide on constructing grow boxes.

For an added surprise, gardening gift ideas that your dad will absolutely love include large trimming secateurs, weed whackers, cutting or trimming power tools, new gloves, rubber boots and garden overalls. These gift ideas are sure to bring a smile to his face!

I would like to wish all fathers a Happy Father’s Day 2019. I wish my dad Koobair Boodram, godfather Troy Boland and brother-in-law Richmond Basant a wonderful Father’s Day. The heart of a father is indeed a masterpiece of nature.
