63rd APM in French Guiana

Bishops before opening mass

Bishops of the Antilles Episcopal Conference (AEC) along with the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu will attend the 63rd Annual Plenary Meeting (APM) hosted by Bishop Emmanuel Lafont of Cayenne, French Guiana from May 4–11.The last time an APM was held in French Guiana was in 1996. The purpose of the APM is for the AEC Bishops to meet and discuss pastoral initiatives and other matters concerning the AEC.

The APM will begin with an opening Mass at the Cathédrale SaintSauveur de Cayenne (Cayenne Cathedral). Following this, the Bishops will embark on a two-day retreat led by Julian Filochowski OBE, Chair of the UK-based Archbishop Romero Trust. The theme of the retreat is St Oscar Romero—A Faith that does Justice.

From Tuesday the meeting will take place at the St Therese Spiritual Centre, where a number of pastoral initiatives concerning the AEC will be discussed—the AEC Mission Congress 2019 (September 19–22) and a Ratio for Priestly Formation in the AEC.

On Friday, Bishop Lafont will treat his brother bishops to a day of relaxation and recreation with a visit to the Kourou Space Centre.
