‘Onabo Kasakabo’ – Earth Day

The Santa Rosa First Peoples’ Community joined the rest of the world in celebrating onabo kasakabo or Earth Day, 2019. Through the advocacy of Her Worship the Mayor of the Arima Borough Corporation—Councillor Lisa Morris Julian, the Community was honoured to work with her and councillors in hosting a visit from the Embassy of the USA in Trinidad and Tobago, on April 24.

Following discussions at the Community’s headquarters at 7 Paul Mitchell Street, His Excellency Ambassador Joseph Mondello, Chief Ricardo Bharath Hernandez, members of the community, the Mayor and councillors, visited the Heritage Village site.

The chief conducted an indigenous water ceremony in honour of the Earth, after which Ambassador Mondello planted a tree (SEE PHOTO), as a tribute to the earth and a lasting memorial of his visit.

Earth Day celebrates the natural beauty of our planet, and it reminds us of what we can do to keep it healthy. The site for the Heritage Village was the perfect place to celebrate since the establishment of the Heritage Village takes into account the Sustainable Development Goals, and in particular Goal 13 Climate Action.

The ongoing reforestation project at the site and eco-sensitive agricultural production is intended to preserve the natural beauty of our environment and promote positive climate action.

The partnership with Ambassador Mondello and Mayor Julian has given high visibility to Chief Bharath Hernandez and the work of the Santa Rosa First Peoples’ Community. – Santa Rosa First Peoples’ Community.
