In 2 Timothy 4 we read: “The time is sure to come when people will not accept sound teaching … and they will collect themselves a whole series of teachers according to their own tastes; and then they will shut their ears to the truth and will turn to myths.”
Surely those times have been with us awhile but they took on new vigour last month when the state of New York in the USA introduced additional legislation to shore up against President Trump’s vow to overturn the January 22, 1973 Roe v Wade Supreme Court ruling that made abortion legal throughout the nation.
There was a standing ovation in the House when the law was passed. And Governor Andrew Cuomo, calling the bill an “historic victory for New Yorkers and our progressive values”, ordered that the spire on One World Trade Center as well as a number of other venues be lit pink overnight to “celebrate this achievement and shine a bright light forward for the rest of the nation to follow” on the anniversary of Roe v Wade. New York was the first state to legalise abortion in 1970.
The 9/11 attack (2001) on the World Trade Center that resulted in the loss of life of almost 3,000 innocent victims has been dubbed the deadliest terrorist attack of all time. By contrast, it is estimated that 60 million babies have been killed by abortion since Roe v Wade.
The Susan B Anthony List highlighted the grim irony of the top of the World Trade Center building being used to celebrate abortion while the memorial below it recognises 11 preborn children killed in the terrorist attacks.
The Reproductive Health Act will allow abortion until birth, permit non-doctors to commit abortion, and erases the state’s recognition of pre-born babies older than 24 weeks as potential homicide victims.
Roger Marshall, an OB/GYN and Republican representing Kansas in the House of Representatives, is one of many who have condemned the law. He pointed out in a February 11 Fox News op-ed that “in a late-term abortion, a mother is at higher risk for … life-threatening hemorrhaging … resulting in … death”, and other damage “which often leads to infertility”.
Several other states have also enacted or are seeking to enact similar legislation, and so far at least one Senate Bill, which would have required doctors to provide medical care to babies born alive during failed abortions, was blocked in early February on the grounds that there are already laws against infanticide.
Operation Rescue has cautioned, however, in a February 11, LifeSiteNews’ article, that infanticide is nothing new in America, and highlighted Governor Ralph Northam’s explanation of how the proposed Virginia late-term abortion law would work, if passed:
“So, in this particular example if a mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen, the infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother.”
Isaiah 5 warns us: “Woe to those who call what is bad, good, and what is good, bad, who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness …Woe to those who think themselves wise and believe themselves enlightened.”
Is it yet time we earnestly embrace that line from the prayer that Jesus Himself taught His disciples: “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil…”?
