Reflect on the causes of injustice in Trinidad and Tobago and the world, and make a commitment to promote justice for all.
The Catholic Commission for Social Justice (CCSJ) issued the call last week ahead of this Wednesday’s observance of the UN designated Day of Social Justice.
“This requires us, inter alia, to step up our efforts to tackle issues such as poverty, social exclusion, equity, and equality,” CCSJ said in a media release.
It stated that citizens are living in a time of social ills such as moral relativism, individualism, greed, social exclusion and economic injustice. These threaten society and world, and are obstacles to the common good.
The release urged Catholics to raise their awareness of the Church’s Social Doctrine which Pope Francis has said, “helps build economic justice, equality and inclusion”. The Holy Father’s warning about the globalisation of indifference was noted.
Citing the Vatican II document, Gaudium et Spes the release continues: “The joys and the hopes, the griefs and the anxieties of the men of this age, especially those who are poor or in any way afflicted, these are the joys and hopes, the griefs and anxieties of the followers of Christ.”
The United Nations has stated that “Social justice is an underlying principle for peaceful and prosperous coexistence within and among nations…We advance social justice when we remove barriers that people face because of gender, age, race, ethnicity, religion, culture or disability.”
The release referred to the numerous examples in Catholic scriptures about the need to build God’s Kingdom of justice, peace, truth, love and freedom.
It asks for personal pledges to make every day a Social Justice Day.
“There is no quick fix; but if we stand together in solidarity with those who suffer daily from human rights violations, we can find solutions to the many injustices that disfigure our country/world”.
