Nuncio presents credentials to Suriname President*

Apostolic Nuncio His Excellency Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu presented his credentials to the President of the Republic of Suriname Tuesday, November 20 during a solemn ceremony at the presidential palace.

The ceremony was attended by Bishop Karel Choennie of Paramaribo and Fr Esteban Kross, Vicar General of the Diocese.

Of the appointment, Fr Kross said that “maintaining diplomatic relations with countries is intended, among other things, to talk about important issues in good consultation with each other”, reported diocesan weekly, OMHOOG.

“It does not just have to be political issues. For the Vatican, important issues can be peace, the resolution of tensions, immigration, poverty and the environment.”

The Vicar General further explained that the apostolic nuncio is not only ambassador of the Vatican, but also representative of the pope to the Catholic community, in this case the Antilles Bishops Conference (AEC).

“Suriname belongs to the AEC and Archbishop Nwachukwu will not only maintain contact with the Surinamese government but also with the Catholic community of Suriname.”

Fr Kross added that while Archbishop Nwachukwu left November 22, “he will definitely come back for a closer acquaintance with the faith community in Suriname”.
