Shirley was a giant of faith, service at OLF

Shirley Lalsingh, a prominent parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima RC Church Curepe, passed away on August 10.

Shirley was a remarkable woman who served the church community wholeheartedly and faithfully over many years. She was involved in myriad aspects of Church life and an active voice on many committees. She was a stalwart “who never thought twice in assisting wherever she was needed”, added one parishioner who spoke glowingly of Shirley.

Another of the faithful remembers her as having “an awesome spirit” and yet another called her “a giant of faith and service at Fatima, a pillar of our community”.

So many tributes poured in at our sister’s passing. Many felt they had lost a dear friend and a sister. Shirley was such a loving and giving person that many young people considered her a mother figure.

Shirley was also a lay minister who gave unstintingly of her time and could always be counted on. Her deep love and devotion to Our Lady was evident by her taking on the responsibility of organising the novenas held in honour of the feast of Our Lady of Fatima and making them such a success.

She took delight in decorating the statue so beautifully that it won the admiration of all. Always included in the programme of the novenas was the ‘Enrolment of the Brown Scapular’ which was one of her ‘pet’ projects.

Shirley willingly took on the responsibility of custodian of the Adoration Chapel and developed a roster of adorers to ensure that Jesus would not be left alone. She was known for her warmth and welcoming disposition and was a great source of inspiration and truly an exemplar of God’s love. She is survived by her loving husband, Lennox and daughter, Lisa.
