On Tuesday, November 6, 47 young persons between the ages of 14 and 20, from the Laventille/Morvant Pastoral Area (LMPA), comprising the parishes of Our Lady of Fatima Shrine, Upper Laventille; St Jude’s Chapel, Trou Macaque; Corpus Christi, Success Village, and St Dominic’s, Morvant, received the Sacrament of Confirmation. The sacrament was conferred upon them by Archbishop Charles Jason Gordon, at the Corpus Christi RC Church. Parish Priest Fr Trevor Nathasingh concelebrated the Mass.
At the beginning of the Mass, Archbishop Gordon commented that it gave him such joy to see a church rocking in praise, referring to the vibrant and energy-filled praise and worship session that took place before the start of the liturgy. He said that this was the first time he did a Confirmation ceremony that was so charismatic and that he thoroughly enjoyed it.
The Archbishop’s message to the candidates was profound as he told them that the happiest life they will ever have is when they live for God’s will. He encouraged them to “stop and ask God what is His will for their lives”.
Archbishop Gordon also shared on his challenge of dyslexia while growing up which led him more and more to God and also led him to work hard. He believed God had a purpose for him just as He has a purpose for them, “which you cannot do by yourself and the best of intentions will not get you there. God’s Holy Spirit will get you to that purpose”.
In closing, he asked the candidates to repeat a short prayer, “Bend my heart to your will, oh God”. He cautioned them that the acronym EGO means Edging God Out. He then led them into an exercise of introspection, asking them to close their eyes and speak to God saying what their deepest desire is and to name the areas in their lives where they need God’s help for them to be better and for their transformation to become the men and women God has called them to be. – Kendell Worrell
