Advent Wreath Rite

From the Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission

Procession of the light to the Sanctuary, or wherever the Advent Wreath will be displayed.

First Sunday of Advent

Leader:  A people that walked in darkness has seen a great light.

All: For those in the land of deep shadow, a light has come.

[The Leader lights the first candle, and then prays:]

Leader:  Let us pray. Give us grace, Lord, to be ever on the watch for Christ, your Son. When he comes and knocks at our door, may he find us alert in prayer,  joyfully proclaiming his glory. Through Christ our Lord.

[The chant ‘Prepare the way of the Lord’ is repeated]

Second Sunday of Advent

On Jordan’s bank the Baptist’s cry announces that the Lord is nigh.

Awake and harken, for he brings glad tidings from the King of Kings.

Leader: A voice cries in the desert, make his paths straight.

All: All mankind shall see, the salvation of our God.

[The Leader lights the second candle, and then prays:]

Clear a pathway, Lord, in our hearts to make ready for your only Son,

so that when he comes , we may serve you in sincerity of heart.

Through Christ, our Lord.

[The hymn ‘On Jordan’s bank’ is repeated.]

Third Sunday of Advent

(Song: Becket Senchur, OSB)

O come, Messiah, come, and full salvation bring. That all the earth, redeemed by grace, one song of praise shall sing.

O come, Messiah, come. Our lives with love adorn. Prepare our hearts Good News to hear: “The Saviour has been born.”

Leader: A virgin will conceive and give birth to a Son.

All: The name he will be called: God is with us

[The Leader lights the third candle and prays]

Let your grace, O Lord, light our pilgrim way to the end.

Support us now and always,

as we wait, longing with all our hearts,

for the coming of Christ, your Son,

who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

[The hymn ‘O come, Messiah, come’ is repeated.]

Fourth Sunday of Advent:

(Song: Fr Garfield Rochard)

Come, Lord Jesus, come, Lord, come! Come, Lord Jesus, come, Lord, come!

Open my eyes, open my mind. Open my heart to peace and love.

So, he comes, bringing righteousness; bringing justice to all the land; so he comes as a man among men: Saviour and Lord of all mankind.

Wonder-Counsellor and Prince of Peace; a man of such integrity! Come, Lord Jesus, we plead to you, come and give us liberty.

Leader: He is the light of revelation to the peoples. He will bring glory to

his people!

All: He is the Saviour of the world!

[The Leader lights the fourth candle and prays:]

Lord, at the angel’s message,

Mary, the immaculate virgin became the temple of God,

and was filled with the light of the Holy Spirit,

when she received your divine Word.

Grant that, after her example,

we may humbly and steadfastly follow your will.

Through Christ, our Lord.

[The hymn, ‘Come, Lord Jesus’ is repeated.]
After the respective candles are lit the procession of ministers takes place with the entrance hymn
