Abbot John Pereira OSB is now unable to return home until February 2019 as he is due for surgery sometime late January next year. Abbot Pereira has been receiving medical attention for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) at the Fatebenefratelli Hospital in Rome since September. He is currently residing at the Benedictine Monastery of Sant’Anselmo.
Abbot Pereira told Catholic News via WhatsApp that though the pulmonary embolism has cleared up and the doctors are pleased with his progress, an earlier surgery date “may be a bit risky”. He revealed that the original plan was to have surgery in early November so that he could return to the monastery at the end of that month.
“However, the doctors have advised that having surgery so soon would have a risk of a second embolism. So I am being treated with blood thinners until just before the surgery,” he said.
Abbot Pereira maintained that he is feeling “better” each day and the medical attention has been “great”. He mentioned that the Abbot Primate and all the brothers at Sant’Anselmo have been supportive and encouraging.
He expressed thanks for those who have supported and prayed for him during this time.–KJ
