Nuncio presents credentials, visits Cathedral

GRENADA

Grenada’s Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell received a courtesy call August 29 from Archbishop Fortunatus Nwachukwu, who was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Grenada earlier this year. The Prime Minister and Archbishop spoke about the many challenges confronting the world today.

Dr Mitchell said the Church as an institution must come to terms with the realities of today’s world, and design its message accordingly. He also emphasised the need for visionary leadership to help effect change. At the end of their amiable discussion, Dr Mitchell presented the Archbishop with a gift of Grenada’s spices.

During his stay in Grenada, Archbishop Nwachukwu was the house guest of Bishop Clyde Harvey. Catholic Media in Grenada reported that in addition to presenting his credentials to the Governor General and Prime Minister, Archbishop Nwachukwu also took the opportunity for some pastoral activity.

The day on which he arrived, Monday, August 27, he visited Bishop Emeritus Sydney Charles in hospital and met for two hours with the bishop and clergy. The next day after presenting his credentials to the Governor General, the Apostolic Nuncio lunched with a group of young people.

In the afternoon, he presided at Mass in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception attended by most of the clergy and religious as well as hundreds of lay persons. He met informally with parish representatives after the Mass.

On the Wednesday, he visited the Home for the Elderly at Pomme Rose run by the Missionaries of Charity where he celebrated Mass with the people in the Home and 30 Sisters who were beginning a renewal programme that day.

In the town of Grenville, a large group of parishioners came out to meet him and he met for over an hour with the nine African priests who are serving in the diocese. That afternoon, he joined all the religious sisters working in the diocese for a very lively discussion followed by supper.

Before returning to Trinidad on Thursday, the Apostolic Nuncio visited the new parliament building in St George’s.
