Parents, keep children safe during vacation

From the Children’s Authority

The Children’s Authority of Trinidad and Tobago congratulates the nations’ SEA candidates on a job well done and wishes them success on the new chapter in their educational life for the new school year.

Parents and guardians are advised to reassure children of their worth regardless of the results. Parents and guardians should also encourage children to express their feelings and celebrate the effort that was made.

The Authority notes that at this time schools are closed and our nation’s children are involved in many activities including camps, family visits or staying at home.

The Authority is urging parents and guardians to ensure the safety of their children during the vacation period. Parents and guardians are reminded:

* to ensure children are supervised at all times by a responsible and trusted adult,

* keep an open line of communication with children so that they can disclose any incidents of abuse,

* be wary of physical and non-physical signs of child abuse in your children (e.g. marks or redness on body; discharges when bathing or changing young children, pain or discomfort in any body part especially genitals, fear or avoidance of a certain adult or place, inappropriate sexual behaviour, poor hygiene, secrecy, and hostility),

* create/have a plan with members of the family, including children on family outings, including mall visits etc.

The Authority will continue its public education campaign by engaging vacation camps to increase awareness on child abuse and protection. The Authority applauds the efforts of citizens who utilise its hotlines to report child abuse and reminds the public that child protection is everybody’s business.

The public is advised that all reports of abuse should be made to the Police at 999 and the Authority’s hotlines at 996 or 800-2014. For more information, the public can visit the Authority’s website at www.ttchildren.org or visit the Authority’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/childrensauthoritytt/
