SUVY at Youth Expo

Archbishop Jason Gordon encouraged hundreds of young people at a national gathering to believe in themselves and take a more active role in church. His appeal came during the June 23 Youth Expo, a one-day event held at the Centre of Excellence this year that drew young Catholics from around the country for a spiritual pep rally.

Archbishop Gordon focused on the youth gathered, using his encounters with the young people there to encourage them to work for peace, reconciliation and justice. He said, “People may judge you to be dreamers, because you believe in a new humanity, one that rejects hatred between peoples, one that refuses to see borders as barriers and can cherish its own traditions without being self-centred or small- minded.”

Johanna Subran and Jehir Alexander from Suburban Vicariate Youth (SUVY) were recognised for their dedication to working with the youth in their vicariate. Mary Immaculate Queen of the Universe (MIQU) Bourg was acknowledged as the most youth-friendly parish in the vicariate.

Randy St Rose, a member of the SUVY Council presented on ‘Youth’ one of the five pillars of the Church. The Council also had a booth called ‘Heaven on earth’ where representatives from each parish in the vicariate portrayed a saint of their choice, in full costume.

Participants of the expo visited the booth and engaged in conversations with the saints to learn more about them. SUVY also participated in the youth concert where Naiyla Nakhid presented a spoken word piece and Akeela and Akim Felix, winners of the SUVY calypso competition, performed at the expo.

The day was a fun-filled day and the young people are looking forward to the next. – SUVY Coordinator
